1. Find a percentage of a number
Result = number × percentage ÷ 100. Example: 18% of ₹2,500 = 2,500 × 18 ÷ 100 = ₹450.
2. What percent is one number of another?
Percentage = part ÷ whole × 100. Example: you scored 42 out of 60: 42 ÷ 60 × 100 = 70%.
3. Percentage increase or decrease
Change % = (new − old) ÷ old × 100. Example: rent rises from ₹15,000 to ₹16,500: 1,500 ÷ 15,000 × 100 = 10% increase.
Discounts
A 30% discount on ₹1,999 saves 1,999 × 30 ÷ 100 = ₹599.70, so you pay ₹1,399.30. Shortcut: multiply by 0.7 directly.
A useful trick
x% of y is the same as y% of x. 8% of 50 is hard; 50% of 8 is 4, and so is 8% of 50.
