How It Calculates

How This Calculator Processes Your Input

Like a physical basic calculator, this tool calculates step by step, left to right, as you press each operator — it does not apply algebraic order of operations (BODMAS/PEMDAS) automatically. Here's what that means in practice.

1
Type 2 + 3 × 4 — the calculator computes 2 + 3 = 5 the moment you press ×, then 5 × 4 = 20 when you press =.
2
A scientific calculator following BODMAS would instead compute 3 × 4 first, giving 2 + 12 = 14.
3
Neither is "wrong" — this is simply how standard basic calculators (and most phone calculator apps in simple mode) have always worked. For algebraic order of operations, use a scientific calculator instead.

Tips for Using This Calculator

Use Memory for Running Totals

Press M+ after each calculation to build a running total, then use MR to recall it anytime.

Know CE vs AC

CE clears only the current entry, while AC resets the entire calculation and starts fresh.

Review Calculation History

Use the history panel to revisit previous calculations without entering the numbers again.

Use Keyboard Shortcuts

Type numbers and operators directly from your keyboard for faster calculations on desktop.

Double-Check Before Calculating

Review your numbers before pressing equals to avoid simple input mistakes.

Clear the Display Regularly

Start each new calculation with a clear display to prevent accidental carry-over from previous results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, completely free with no sign-up, subscription, or usage limits — use it as often as you like.
No. Like most basic and physical calculators, it computes step by step in the order you press keys, not by algebraic precedence. See the "How This Calculator Processes Your Input" section above for a worked example.
CE (Clear Entry) only clears the number you're currently typing, keeping your ongoing calculation intact. AC (All Clear) resets the entire calculator, including the current operation.
M+ adds the current display value to memory, M− subtracts it, MR recalls the stored value into the display, MS stores the current value directly (overwriting what's there), and MC clears memory completely.
Yes. Number keys, +, -, *, /, Enter (for equals), Backspace, Escape (for clear) and % all work directly — see the Keyboard Shortcuts section above.
No. History is kept only in your browser for this session and is not sent to or stored on our servers. Refreshing the page clears it.
Enter the price, press ×, enter the discount percentage, then press % followed by =. For example, 1000 × 20% gives you the discount amount directly.
The calculator will show an error message, since division by zero is mathematically undefined. Press AC to clear and start again.
Yes — you can chain operations like 5 + 3 + 2 + 10, and the calculator will compute each step sequentially as you go.
Results display with standard floating-point precision and trim unnecessary trailing zeros, so you see a clean, accurate number without excessive digits.
Yes, use the ± button to toggle the sign of the number currently on screen, before or after typing it.
Yes, the calculator is fully responsive and works the same way on phones, tablets, laptops, and desktops.
No. All calculations, memory, and history happen entirely in your browser — nothing is transmitted to or stored on our servers.
Enter the bill amount, press ×, enter the tip percentage (e.g. 15), then press % to see the tip amount, or check our percentage shortcuts table above for a mental-math trick.
Use the backspace (←) button to remove the last digit typed, or CE to clear just the current entry without affecting your ongoing calculation.
The % key converts the current number based on the pending operation — for addition/subtraction it calculates a percentage of the first number, while for multiplication/division it simply converts to a decimal. This matches how most basic calculators handle percent.
No. This is a basic calculator for everyday arithmetic — addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and percentages. It doesn't include trigonometric, logarithmic, or advanced scientific functions.
Yes, click any entry in the "Recent Calculations" panel and its result loads straight back into the display, ready for your next calculation.
Yes, both memory and history reset when you close or refresh the page, since nothing is saved outside your current browser session.
Most mobile browsers let you "Add to Home Screen" for quick access, which makes it launch like a lightweight app without needing an app store download.
